Home | Mekedatu | Mekedatu Map

Mekedatu is a lovely spot along Kaveri in Bangalore rural district. Sangama is the place where Arkavati merges with Kaveri. From this point, about 3.5 kilometers downstream, the river Kaveri flows through a deep gorge so narrow that one would think that a goat can leap and cross it ('Mekedatu' means, 'goat's leap' in Kannada). Of course, it is not really so narrow and no goat commonly found in that part of India would do that distance in a single leap. Mekedatu is about 90 km from Bangalore via Kanakapura.

There is a lot of mythological significance also to this place (both Sangama and Mekedatu.) As per one version, the goat (meke) that is believed to have lept across the Kaveri was Lord Shiva in disguise. On both rocky precipices of the gorge, one can find strange gigantic holes, whose shapes resemble goats' hooves, though several times larger. Only heavenly (or Godly) goats can mark their 'footprints' in such hard rocks!!

At Mekedatu, the Kaveri runs through a deep, narrow ravine of hard granite rock. The river which is more than 150 meters wide at the confluence (at Sangama) flows through the hardly 10 meters wide gorge at Mekedatu.. one can see the ferocious flow of all that water, displaying Bernoulli's theorem. It is said that a goat could leap over it, giving the falls the name Goat's Leap.

Upstream on the Kaveri is the famous Sivasamudram Falls, the second biggest waterfall in India and the sixteenth largest in the world both of which statements are disputed by world waterfalls. Around 5 km before Sangama is a waterfall on the river Arkavathi. You would not find much water most of the year except in the monsoons.

How To Reach Makedatu & Chunchi Falls
To reach Sangama, drive on Kanakapura road from Bangalore. You need to leave the highway after Kanakapura and take a left. Inquire once you reach the town. Another option is to take a circuitous route by driving on the highway till Satanur and taking a left from there. Once you are in Sangama, you can take a bus that keeps shuttling between Mekedatu and Sangama. But most people prefer to walk leisurely along the riverbank. To go to Chunchi falls, take a left turn around 5km before Sangama. There is a sign on the road which you will not miss. Nearby places to visit include Muthathi village in Cauvery Wildlife Sanctuary, Galibore fishing camp and Jungle Lodges at Bheemeshwari.

Controversy
In 1992, a young child fell prey to a tiger named Bill, allegedly due to carelessness of the Forest Department staff. The incident raised questions on the security of the mini-safari and its maintenance.

However at the time of the tragedy, private vehicles were allowed inside the Safari. The child in question was traveling in a private car driven by his father. The child's grandfather was sitting with the child in his lap and the car stopped annoyingly close to a tiger (supposedly just 2 feet (0.61 m) away). The child's grandfather is rumored to have rolled down the car's window glass and held the kid in the window to give the child a better look at the tiger. They also made loud noises. The irritated tiger took a swipe and the child died instantly.

In the aftermath of the incident private vehicles were stopped from venturing in to the tiger and lion safari. Now the park itself operates several mini-buses to serve the people.

SATHANUR RESERVOIR

Sathanur is a village located near Magadi in Bangalore district of Karnataka. It was the birthplace of musician/composer Pandareeka Vittala.

About 65 km from Bangalore, You need to go to Magadi, a town of medium size from where it is just about 8 kilometers. You should continue on from Magadi and you need to take a right diversion from the main road joining Magadi and Huliyurudurga at Byranahalli/Sathanur cross. Then you will immediately hit a road which was made of only mud till recently. It was tarred during the 400th birth anniversary celebration of Pandareeka Vittala in 2002 when a lot of eminent people and a couple of prominent politicians visited this easily forgotten hamlet. However the road is again acquiring its old characteristics.

You will cross a small bridge built over an equally small stream of about 8 feet in width. Going on straight, you will see green fields on both the sides of the road (especially in Autumn). After a few minutes of treading the same path, on your right, you will see an old building with a tiled roof. This is the primary school building.

SATHANUR DAM & RESERVOIR
Sathanur Dam, is one of the major dams constructed across the Pennaiyar River. Sathanur Dam is constructed across the Thenpennai River in Thandarampet Taluk among Chennakesava Hills. Eco-Tourism Development Board
Eco-tourism in Karnataka is expected to receive a big boost with the state cabinet on 15 August, 2013 approving the proposal to set up Eco-Tourism Development Board.

The forest minister will be the boards chairman. Announcing the decision, higher education minister VS Acharya said the initiative would help the government immensely in protecting the wildlife, creating awareness about it, encouraging eco-tourism, forest safaris and also prevent damage to eco-system in the name of tourism.

Madhya Pradesh and Himachal Pradesh have already set up such boards to boost eco-tourism. Acharya said the board would bring private investments to the state and avail consultancy.

Tourist spots like Bandipur National Park, eco garden gulbarga would see huge improvement in tapping the tourism potential, he added.
